Guillermo Habacuc Vargas admits on his new created MySpace page, that he indeed killed the dog!

Here is a part of his original [most recent] statement:"Hello everyone. My name is Guillermo Habacuc Vargas. I am 50 years old and an artist. Recently, I have been critisized for my work titled "Eres lo que lees", which features a dog named Nativity. The purpose of the work was not to cause any type of infliction on the poor, innocent creature, but rather to illustrate a point. In my home city of San Jose, Costa Rica, tens of thousands of stray dogs starve and die of illness each year in the streets and no one pays them a second thought.

Now, if you publicly display one of these starving creatures, such as the case with Nativity, it creates a backlash that brings out a big of hypocrisy in all of us. Nativity was a very sick creature and would have died in the streets anyway.

"So there is just this to say: We see, that not only the gallery was lying from the beginning, but also, what we have to think about all statements of this "artist".

We see how he is changing his statement, depending on how the public reactions are - first statement was "the dog would have died anyway" - second statement was "I cannot say if the dog died or not" - third statement was "I wanted to do it to remember Mr.Natividad Canda" [the burglar killed by guard dogs] - fourth statement was "I did the exhibition to show the terrible situation of street dogs".... etc...

The next statement will be obviously "Santa Claus and Ronald McDonald jumped into the exhibition and took the dog" or something like that?!

"Cão Morre Numa Exposição

O artista Habacuc deixou um cão morrer à fome durante uma exposição. Os defensores dos direitos do animais já lançaram uma petição online para que o artista seja banido da Bienal Centroamericana Honduras 2008.

O artista Guillermo Vargas, mais conhecido por Habacuc, está a dar que falar em todo mundo. O motivo desta atenção não são as suas obras de arte, mas sim o facto de ter deixado propositadamente um cão morrer à fome durante a sua última exposição.

A "Exposição nº1" teve lugar em Agosto, em Manágua, na Nicarágua. À entrada, os visitantes podiam ler a frase "És o que lês", seguindo-se um cenário pouco comum: entre as obras do artista estava um cão, faminto e doente, amarrado por uma corda a um canto da sala.
Mesmo após alguns apelos dos visitantes para que o animal fosse libertado, o artista recusou-se a fazê-lo justificando que se tratava de uma homenagem a Natividad Canda, um nicaraguense que morreu depois de ter sido atacado por um rotweiller.

Ironicamente, o cão acabou por morrer à fome em plena exposição quando o título da amostra estava escrito numa parede através de uma colagem feita à base de comida canina."A petição pode ser assinada em

El artista costarricense Guillermo Vargas, más conocido como Habacuc , está envuelto en una gran polémica debido a la muerte de un perro callejero dentro de Exposición N° 1 , muestra que se realizó en agosto pasado en Managua (Nicaragua).

Varios defensores de los animales en Costa Rica se enteraron de su obra a través de un blog y lo acusaron ayer de crueldad.

Lo que se vio en Managua. Como parte de su exposición, el artista enfrentó al espectador a un perro callejero flaco, enfermo y con hambre amarrado a la esquina de la sala. Él capturó al animal en un barrio pobre de Managua.

El perro murió tras un día en la exposición, según se lo confirmó a La Nación Marta Leonor González, editora del suplemento cultural de La Prensa en Nicaragua.

La muestra también incluyó la frase, escrita con alimento de perro, “Eres lo que lees”; así como de un audio con el Himno Sandinista al revés, fotos y un incensario, donde se quemaron 175 piedras de crack y una onza de marihuana.

Habacuc dijo ayer que su obra fue un homenaje a Natividad Canda, nicaragüense que murió tras ser atacado por dos perros rottweiler en un taller en Cartago.

“Me reservo decir si es cierto o no que el perro murió. Lo importante para mí era la hipocresía de la gente: un animal así se convierte en foco de atención cuando lo pongo en un lugar blanco donde la gente va a ver arte pero no cuando está en la calle muerto de hambre. Igual pasó con Natividad Canda, la gente se sensibilizó con él hasta que se lo comieron los perros”, explicó .
Incluso agregó: “Nadie llegó a liberar al perro ni le dio comida o llamó a la policía. Nadie hizo nada”.

Al ser cuestionado acerca de si alimentó al animal o no, el artista se negó a responder.
¿Por qué no usó otro medio de expresión? “Recojo lo que miro... El perro está más vivo que nunca porque sigue dando qué hablar”, dijo.

Enojo tico. Varios defensores de los derechos de los animales repudiaron ese trabajo de Habacuc , lo descalificaron como obra de arte y sugirieron que al artista se le excluya de la Bienal Centroamericana Honduras 2008, ya que él será uno de los seis representantes del país.

“Me espanté al ver que se fomenta la crueldad hacia los animales en una obra de arte.

Presentaremos una carta para que se prohiba la crueldad en el arte y para que este muchacho no represente al país en la bienal”, expresó Gina Malavassi, defensora de los animales.

José Morales, vicepresidente de la Unidad Especial de Protección y Rescate Animal, opinó. “El perro estaba amarrado y sin comida; no entiendo en qué cabeza eso es arte”.

Liliam Schnog, presidenta de la Asociación Humanitaria para la Protección Animal, dijo que no entiende cómo se dejó morir de hambre a un animal si a la par había una frase hecha con comida.
Estas organizaciones estudian el caso con el fin de ver si procede alguna denuncia.

Según supe el perro murió al día siguiente por falta de comida. Durante la inauguración supe que el perro fue perseguido por la tarde entre las casas de aluminio y cartón de un barrio de Managua con nombre de santo que Habacuc que no pudo precisar en el momento. 5 niños de los que ayudaron en la captura recibieron bonos de 10 córdobas por su colaboración. Durante la exhibición algunas personas pidieron la libertad del perrito, a lo que él artista se rehuso. El nombre del perro era (fue) Natividad, y se le dejo morir de hambre a la vista de todos, como si la muerte de un pobre perro fuera un show mediático desvergonzado en el que nadie hace nada más que aplaudir o mirar desconcertado.

Definitivamente somos lo que leimos: puras croquetas.

En el lugar que el perro estuvo expuesto solo queda un cable de metal y una cuerda. El perro estaba sumamente enfermo, renqueaba y no quería comer de todos modos, así que en un entorno natural hubiera muerto de todos modos; pero así son todos los pobres perros: tarde o temprano se mueren o los mueren.

La exposición no contaba con fichitas ni letreros museográficos que indicasen que ES cada obra. Mientras la música sonaba poco a poco la gente reconocía el ritmo y preguntaban si ese acaso era el himno del Frente... el cual precisamente era, pero tocado de principio a fin en reversa.

Le chien est mort au jour suivant par manque de repas. Pendant l'inauguration j'ai su que le chien a été poursuivi l'après-midi entre les maisons en aluminium et en carton dans un quartier de Managua .Cinq enfants ont aidé à la capture et ont reçu 10 córdobas pour leur collaboration. Pendant l'exposition quelques personnes ont demandé la liberté pour ce chien, mais l'artiste a refusé. Le nom du chien était (il a été) Natividad, et on le laisse mourir de faim à la vue de de tous, comme si le décès d'un chien pauvre était une exposition médiatique.

Nous ne pouvons rien faire pour ce chien mais on peut essayer que les organisateurs de de la Biennale d'Amérique centrale du Honduras 2008 n'admettent pas cet "artiste" maltraitant d'animaux. Adhérez à cette demande pour que cet acte honteux ne soit pas possible et rassemblez le maximum de signatures pour interdire à cet homme de participer à la Biennale en 2008.

Dog starved to death for art

This is one of the most disturbing examples of human apathy I’ve ever seen…words are simply not sufficient to express my outrage.

Sample Letter to Send the GalleryI am writing regarding the horrifying actions of Guillermo Habacuc Vargas,who paid local children to catch a dog on the street and then confined, starved and publicly displayed the dog as an “art” exhibit until the innocent animal died of starvation.

I along with many people world wide am outraged that Guillermo habacuc Vargas has been selected to represent Costa Rica in “Bienal Centroamericana Honduras 2008″,This man is by no definition of the word an artist he is a criminally insane sadist and enjoys inflicting prolonged suffering upon his innocent victims.he is a danger to all of society as it is well dodirty wordented that those with the capacity to intentionally cause harm to an animal have the same capacity to harm humans.

To state that this animal would have died eventually of natural causes is unjustifiable and beyond logical,rational thinking.

To allow Guillermo habacuc Vargas to represent Costa Rica in Bienal Centroamericana Honduras 2008 will in no way benefit Costa Rica,the world is watching and the actions of this so called artist has brought much negative dirty wordumptions as to the humanity of the people of Costa Rica and the fact that the many witnesses of this animals suffering did nothing and that the organizers of this event allowed this rather than taking action to see that Guillermo Vargas be criminally charged with animal abuse is sending the world a message that Costa Rica consists of a cruel,uncivilized society that has no regard for life but enjoys viewing and contributing to the loss of life.

Each and every person who knew of and witnessed the suffering of this innocent dog is equally as guilty of causing it’s uncalled for death.And to let this crime go unpunished and instead be awarded by Guillermo Vargas representing Costa Rica in Bienal Centroamericana Honduras 2008 is unacceptable and shameful not only to Costa Rica but to all participants of this event.
